FASTag KYC: what you need and how to complete it

The documents, the difference between minimum and full KYC, and how to keep your tag from being blocked.

KYC is the paperwork step nobody thinks about until the tag stops working. A FASTag that has been paying tolls happily for months can suddenly be rejected at a plaza, and nine times out of ten there's nothing wrong with the balance — the KYC on the wallet has fallen due. Here's what KYC actually involves, what you need to hand over, and how to get it done without losing a day to it.

Why KYC exists

A FASTag isn't just a sticker — behind it sits a prepaid wallet held with the issuing bank. Because that wallet holds and moves money, the RBI requires the issuer to verify who owns it, exactly as it does for any other prepaid payment instrument. That verification is your KYC.

The practical consequence is simple: if the issuer can't confirm your identity, or the record it holds has gone stale, it is obliged to restrict the wallet. Pending or incomplete KYC is one of the single most common reasons a perfectly good tag suddenly stops paying tolls and gets hotlisted. It rarely gives you warning — the first sign is usually the barrier not lifting.

Minimum KYC vs full KYC

Not all FASTag wallets are verified to the same depth. A minimum-KYC wallet is the lighter option: it's quicker to open, needs less documentation, but comes with lower balance and monthly usage caps, and restrictions on what you can do with the wallet — refunds and transfers in particular are limited.

Full KYC lifts those restrictions. The wallet limits go up substantially and the usage caps come off, which matters a great deal if you drive long distances regularly or run a commercial vehicle that crosses several plazas a day. The exact limits vary by issuer and change from time to time, so check the current figures with your bank rather than relying on a number you read somewhere.

Our advice for anyone beyond occasional weekend driving: go full KYC from the start. Minimum KYC tends to become a problem exactly when it's least convenient — mid-journey, with a queue behind you. If your tag is already on minimum KYC, our FASTag KYC update service handles the upgrade.

Documents usually needed

Requirements differ slightly between issuing banks, but the core set is consistent:

Vehicle RCFront & back, clearly readable
Identity proofAadhaar, PAN, driving licence or passport
Address proofMatching your current address
Passport photoRecent passport-size photograph

Two things trip people up more than anything else. First, the RC must be legible — a blurred or half-cropped photo gets rejected and you start again. Second, the name and address on your identity and address proof should match what the issuer already holds; if you've moved, sort the address proof out first.

How to complete or update it

There are two routes. You can do it yourself through your issuing bank's FASTag portal or mobile app — log in, find the KYC or profile section, upload the documents, and wait for the bank to verify them. Processing time varies by issuer and by how busy they are.

Or you can send the same documents to us on WhatsApp and we'll handle the submission and the follow-up with the issuer. That's usually the faster route if you're not sure which portal your tag belongs to, if a previous upload was rejected and you don't know why, or if you simply don't want to spend an afternoon on it. Either way, the documents required are the same.

When you must re-do KYC

KYC isn't strictly one-and-done. You'll need to redo or update it in these situations:

  • Your address or registered mobile number has changed
  • The tag has been hotlisted or blacklisted for pending KYC
  • The bank has sent a re-verification request — these have deadlines, and missing one blocks the wallet
  • The vehicle has changed hands — a transfer of ownership means fresh KYC in the new owner's name

That last one applies to used-vehicle buyers in particular. If the previous owner's tag is still on the windscreen, it's still linked to their wallet and their KYC. It needs to be closed and a new tag issued in your name — it can't simply be signed over.

Tag already blacklisted for KYC? In most cases completing the KYC restores it, often the same day. Start with a FASTag status check to confirm the reason, then our KYC update service gets it cleared.
